Class Expectations
Welcome to Mrs. Carey's Reading Class
Dear Parent/Guardian,
My name is Debby Carey, and I am excited to serve as the Reading Specialist at Inspiration Mountain School. If you have come to this page it probably means that your child has been chosen to receive some additional support for reading, or maybe you just wanted to learn a bit more about what I do in my reading groups. I will be instructing your child approximately 4 days a week in a small group setting, working on specific reading skills. We will mostly work on phonics and phonological awareness because these are early literacy skills that must be mastered in order to successfully learn to read. Once these skills are mastered, then reading for meaning is much easier.
The expectation for my class is that students are engaged and ready to learn. I create a safe learning environment for my students so that they are not afraid to make mistakes. We often celebrate our mistakes, and they quickly understand that mistakes are what help us learn. I require my students to respect each other and understand that learning looks different for everyone. We all learn at our own pace. Attendance is a large component to student success. My lessons are taught sequentially, so if a student misses a lot of school it will be difficult for him/her to close the gap in reading.
Please remember that we are all partners, and we all contribute to the growth of your child. When time permits, read with your child in order to help her/him become more independent in their reading abilities.
If you have any questions, please email me at Deborah.carey@dvusd.org
Sincerely,
Debby Carey
